17. Grey Squirrel Sciurus carolinensis

1970-1997

1980-2000

This map indicates the extent of colonisation in just over 60 years. There is a similar gap in the distribution pattern to that of the Hedgehog along the line of the gritstone edges to the west of Sheffield, although Grey Squirrels venture out onto moorlands more frequently as populations increase. The map also shows a marked increase in records in woodlands to the north west of Sheffield, once the stronghold of Red Squirrels. There is an interesting dearth of records north of Tideswell which needs further investigation. More survey work is also required in some eastern areas where Grey Squirrels may be genuinely scarce.
