15. Brown Hare Lepus capensis

1970-1997

1980-2000 Interim map

There does not seem to have been any noticeable general decline in this species locally, despite a national decline. There appears to be a slight increase in records for the White Peak, which remains a stronghold for Brown Hares. Apparently scarce in urban and suburban Sheffield / Rotherham and on high moorland. Not uncommon in other upland habitats e.g. coniferous woodland and upland pasture. Squares recorded in the 1970's nee to be revisited to determine a true picture of any distribution changes.
