16. Red Squirrel Sciurus vulgaris

This species has continued to decline very sharply since 1980 and there has been only a handful of records since 1990. In 1997 a few still remain in coniferous woodland to the north west of Sheffield, but it is likely that this species will very soon be extinct in this area.
