14. Mountain Hare Lepus timidus

1970-1997

1980-2000

This map shows a restricted distribution associated with upland heather and cottongrass moorland, and occasionally with other habitats in severe weather. There appears to be a slight decline in recorded squares since 1980, resulting from population reductions following severe winters in the late 1970s and mid 1980s. SK288, the ten-kilometre square nearest to Sheffield, has noticeably fewer records compared to the 1980 map indicating a reduction in range. It remains to be seen whether Mountain Hare numbers and distribution can recover if the current trend of mild winters continues.
