The Sorby Mammal Atlas

< Previous Index Next >

Introduction

The maps in this atlas update those published in Mammals of the Sheffield Area (Clinging & Whiteley 1980) for the post-1970 dateband. We have also included a second set of maps for most species covering the dateband 1980-2000. These are intended to act as working maps or interim maps for the current recording scheme which runs until the end of the year 2000. We then intend to publish a full updated account of local mammals.

Some species, for example bats, may have different datebands which relate to advances in recording techniques, new technology, taxonomic advances or additional species new to the local list.

Deer records are published in this format for the first time, but based on the recent Sheffield and Doncaster Deer Surveys (McCarthy, Howes and Baker 1996) which cover a wider geographical area. Mammals of the Sheffield Area (1980) did not include maps of deer, bats, Otter, Polecat-Ferret or Mink. Preliminary maps of bats were published by Whiteley (1986) mainly based on recent survey work.
