Arthur Whitaker’s Bats

Arthur Whitaker (1882 - 1949)

Arthur Whitaker (1882 – 1949)

In 1987, the Sorby/Sheffield Bat Group published a book about Arthur Whitaker’s pioneering research on bats in the early 20th century.

The book comprised a series of papers originally published in the YNU’s Naturalist magazine between 1905 and 1913. Derek Whiteley edited the book and wrote the preface. Colin Howes researched and wrote a biography of Arthur Whitaker.

Born and raised at Worsborough Bridge, Arthur Whitaker developed a passionate interest in natural history. He became an active member of first the Barnsley Naturalist and Scientific Society, then the Yorkshire Naturalists’ Union. In later life, he moved to Abbeydale and joined the newly formed Sorby Natural History Society, becoming its president in 1929.

The 1987 publication “Arthur Whitaker’s Bats” has long been out-of-print, but it is now available as a series of PDF downloads (see below).
