The Sorby Natural History Society celebrates its 80th anniversary year in 1998. To give you some idea of the activities way back then, here is a list of meetings held during the first year of the Sorby Society:-

| 18 March 1918: | Council Meeting. | |
| 25 March 1918: | Inaugural Meeting (a series of short lectures). | |
| 27 April 1918: | First field meeting - Ewden Valley. | |
| 25 May 1918: | Cordwell Valley. | |
| 22 June 1918: | Kiveton Park & Lindrick. | |
| 27 July 1918: | Lindrick Dale. | |
| 28 September 1918: | Fungus Foray - Clumber Park. | |
| 25 October 1918: | An evening on the life and work of Dr. Sorby. | |
| 15 November 1918: | Members' Night (and first Peacetime meeting). | |
| 13 December 1918: | Lecture on Extinct Animals. | |
| 31 January 1919: | First AGM. |
We will be trying to repeat some of these meetings during our 80th Birthday year - a year of looking back, looking forward, and enjoying and celebrating the present.
