80 Years Ago

The Sorby Natural History Society celebrates its 80th anniversary year in 1998. To give you some idea of the activities way back then, here is a list of meetings held during the first year of the Sorby Society:-

1 January 1918:Sorby Scientific Society founded.
25 January 1918:First General Meeting (held at the University).
18 March 1918:Council Meeting.
25 March 1918:Inaugural Meeting (a series of short lectures).
27 April 1918:First field meeting - Ewden Valley.
25 May 1918:Cordwell Valley.
22 June 1918:Kiveton Park & Lindrick.
27 July 1918:Lindrick Dale.
28 September 1918:Fungus Foray - Clumber Park.
25 October 1918:An evening on the life and work of Dr. Sorby.
15 November 1918:Members' Night (and first Peacetime meeting).
13 December 1918:Lecture on Extinct Animals.
31 January 1919:First AGM.

We will be trying to repeat some of these meetings during our 80th Birthday year - a year of looking back, looking forward, and enjoying and celebrating the present.
